Mission
As Pope Francis says, “The Church must be like God: always going out“. Following the Lord’s command to “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature.” (Mk. 16:15), we must be heralds of the Good News because God, “who wills everyone to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth.” (1 Tim. 2:4).
Apostolate is that for which Jesus chose, prepared and sent the Twelve. We Catholics are called to take part in this apostolate, thanks to our Baptism, it is the will of God.
This apostolate extends to various fields:
- Apostolate of prayer: it is of utmost importance for the apostolate and its work; without prayer the apostolic work remains fruitless. St. Paul the Apostle was aware of this importance: “ Finally, brothers, pray for us, so that the word of the Lord may speed forward and be glorified, as it did among you” (2 Thess. 3,1). Without prayer there is no apostle or apostleship. Whoever cannot be an apostle of the word, let him be an apostle of prayer. The apostolate of the word must be accompanied and made fruitful by prayer.
- Apostolate of the Word: it is a true obligation, “Refrain not from speaking at the proper time, and hide not away your wisdom” (Sir. 4:23). “proclaim the word; be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient…” (2 Tim. 4:2).
- Apostolate of Good Example: salt gives flavor to food, so that it pleases; our kindness should give flavor to our speech so that it pleases: “ A slave of the Lord should not quarrel, but should be gentle with everyone, able to teach, tolerant, correcting opponents with kindness. It may be that God will grant them repentance that leads to knowledge of the truth,” (2 Tim 2:24-25). As the well-known saying goes, “Words illustrate, examples attract”.
- Apostolate among the poor: Helping the poor in an apostolic spirit is an apostolate like prayer and good example. This help to the poor is also very useful in preparing the minds and wills of the poor so that they may gladly receive the Word of God.
The Missionary Sisters of Jesus Word and Victim want to integrate our specifically missionary apostolate, working in remote, abandoned and poor places to fulfill the missionary mandate of the Lord to go and preach. As Pope Francis says:
The mission will also always be “missio ad gentes”, because the Church must always go further afield, beyond her own confines, to proclaim the love of Christ to all.
